The Kalbeliyas is a snake-charmer community from Rajasthan, which performs the Kalbeliya dance. They rely heavily on this dance performance for their living. The Kalbeliya women dancers wear long, black colored, dwindled skirts heavily worked with embroidery and light-colored thread along with small pieces of mirrors. This costume draws attention in a somewhat strange way.

The dance is usually performed by a group of two women standing in the center of the stage. After this pair, another pair of women comes & dances in the same way. As the women dancers move in a circle, while dancing, their body sways acrobatically, leaving the impression that they are made up of some flexible material like rubber. The beat of the dance increases in tempo and also there is an increase in the pace of the dance. This dance performance leaves the viewer as exhausted as the dancer. The overall performance consists of many fearful actions performed by dancers. The performance relies heavily on the music of been and duff. The actual fun of their performance can be enjoyed at the gatherings somewhere around the festival of Holi.

The dancers are required to constantly decrease the tempo of their gyrations and move to the corners to catch their breath while two other dancers would spin around to take their places in the center. The specialty of this dance is that the dancers perform it in a beautiful synchronized rhythm that for a moment the audience feels they are the same dancers that continue throughout the performance.

Kalbelia Dance Evolution

Kalbelia dance is a dance of the Kalbelia tribe of Rajasthan. This tribe is a community of Rajasthan which in ancient times was known to move frequently from one place to another rather than staying and building their homes in one place. Kalbelia tribe people are known to have the main occupation of catching snakes and trading snake venom. They are also called Sapera’s or Snake Charmers. Kalbelia folk dance is performed by females on the tunes of Been on the occasion of joy in the Kalbelia community. There is no organized training system or school, manuscripts, and written text to teach and learn Kalbelia songs and Kalbelia dance. This folk art is transmitted from generation to generation.

Kalbelia Dance Elements

Kalbelia dance has a traditional musical instrument which is Poongi also called Been. Poongi is a kind of woodwind musical instrument used by the Kalbelia tribe during catching snakes. Other traditional musical instruments used by the Kalbelia tribe in Kalbelia dance are Dufli, Morchang, Dholak, Khanjari, and Khuralio. When these instruments play all together with poongi, they result in sensuous and amazing music.

In Kalbelia dances the main performer is female dancers who dance and swirl, replicating the movements of a serpent. Dancers wear the traditional dress of the Kalbelia tribe. On the upper body, the female Kalbelia dancers wear Angrakhi. On the head, the female Kalbelia dancers wear Odhani. They wear a long skirt on the lower body which has a wide circumference. This long skirt of Kalbelia dancers is called Lehenga or Ghagra. This complete dress is essentially black in color with red decorative laces. Embroidery from a silver thread in various patterns on the black dress resembles a black snake with white spots or white stripes.
